February 12, 2012

We had a beautiful service together this morning at Temple B’nai Chaim. Our third graders were very excited this morning as they helped lead services by singing the Shema, V’Ahavtah, and the Borachu. They were also the ark openers today.
Our kindergarteners completed two work sheets about trees, as Tu B’Shevat was on Wednesday. They heard the story “Grandpa and Me on Tu B’Shevat “and Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree.” Our kindies sang a song about trees. Due to the cold weather they had an indoor recess and enjoyed their Challah. They enjoyed creating their own trees as a craft today. They heard the story Sammy Spider’s Tu B’Shevat and then they had time for a floor puzzle.
Out first and second graders worked on some mazes about Tu B’Shevat and talked about recycling. Today they started learning about our next big holiday… Purim! They even made their own Megillot Esther. Today was a lot of fun in Ms. Jill’s class.
Today our third graders learned the letter Zayin and reviewed the letters they already know. The Ten Commandments were the topic of discussion. They discussed what they would have made as commandments…they made up some of their own!
Our fourth and fifth graders worked on BCE (Before the Common Era) timelines and the many events that occurred. They read and learned more in their Jewish History books. They were able to compare their timelines with a similar timeline in their history books.
Our sixth graders discussed the relationship the Jewish people have with G-d and how that relationship continues today. They discussed Justice and Mercy and Honor and Respect. They were able to relate to a story and connect it to their lives. Then they practiced their play that will be part of our Purim Service on March 11, 2012 during our service.
Our B’nai Mitzvah class worked very hard this week on prayer. They all were so focused and really sang well together. They are realizing how much work it is to learn all the prayers they need to be an active participant in their own Bar or Bat Mitzvah. They enjoyed their challah and juice!
Remember that due to President’s Day weekend, we will not have Religious School on Sunday February 19th.
There has also been a change in the calendar. We will not have Religious School or Hebrew on Sunday April 8th . The Congregational Seder for Second night of Passover is on Saturday April 7th and it has been decided to cancel school on Sunday April 8th.

February 5, 2012

Tu B’Shevat literally means the 15th day of Shevat. This year the New Year of the Trees actually falls on Wednesday, February 8th. We celebrated today at Religious School. Rather than a traditional Tu B’Shevat Seder, we had a Tu B’Shevat Tasting today!
All of our students traveled from station to station tasting the fruits of Israel. Each table had different types of fruits. Some represented the types of people that are hard on the outside but soft on the inside. They tasted oranges, almonds, and kiwi. At another station they tasted fruits that represented people that are soft on the outside but hard or tough on the inside. They tasted mango, dates and plums. At another area they tasted fruits the can be eaten entirely such as strawberries and cranberries. These represent people that are soft inside and hard on the outside.
Our students also tasted juices that represent the four seasons: white grape juice representing winter, a light pink mixed with white and red juices to represent spring, summer was a darker pink, and finally a red grape juice representing the fall.
Our social hall has the posters our students made with various themes such as: Save the trees, Ways in which we use tress, Tu B’Shevat, and many wonderful creations demonstrating the love for trees in our lives and in Israel. The students all learned about the JNF forests in Israel and received an envelope in which they can purchase trees in memory or in honor of someone.
Also thinking about our environment, the students made bird feeders to hang up in their trees. They had fun dipping small bagels into honey and then coating them with birdseed.
Our children were also singing songs with our Music specialist Linda Leonard who will be with us periodically throughout the school year. They sounded terrific and I could tell they were really enjoying the Tu B’Shevat songs. Linda also played guitar during our morning service with Rabbi Sokol and everyone really enjoyed the service.
Today’s Tu B’Shevat Tasting was dedicated to the memory of my brother, Alan, who actually passed away many years ago on Tu B’shevat and in memory of my mother, Marilyn Schneider. I hope that everyone enjoyed the festivities as much as I enjoyed preparing, organizing, and sponsoring today’s celebration.
